That didn't take long. Probably a good move to pick a dude from a different continent for once. Especially from the one where their church is still extremely influential. (Still managed to find a white guy, though. :/ )

"Francis" is more of a northern European name to me. He should've picked "Francisco" to spice it up a little. It is the Pope's choice after all. Unless there's a list you have to pick from.

There's my superficial assessment.

Props to South America, though. They got the pope; they got their first Olympics coming up; they're starting to shake their 20th Century stereotype of constant civil war and narco-terrorism. Things are looking up down there.

The pope choose the Latin versions of their new names, which translate to all the other versions of the name. For Franciscum we get:

Francesco
Francisco
François
Francis
Franz

And the Polish Franciszek :)

Yes, I can clearly see the irony: out of all the Latin American cardinals they had to choose the one specifically of Italian descent. Nice going, you guys! After all, is it so impossible that certain members of the conclave do, in fact, want Jesus to ultimately take matters into his own hands, which is the main idea of this particular prophecy, as well as Christianity in general? Besides, nobody expected señor Bergoglio to literally fulfill it by picking Peter II as his "nom de guerre." Such a joke would have been a bit over the top, considering only a few people with an exquisite sense of humor could fully appreciate it.

Wanting Jesus to ultimately take matters into his own hands won't make him get here any faster, which is why taking the Malachy list seriously is folly in the first place.

Also, celebs react to the new papal election. My good ones are:

Kathy Griffin: "I don't know about u but my conclave is exhausted. Did @CNN just say "this new pope needs no introduction" Is it Madonna?"

Kal Penn: "This pope cam on TV reminds me of 'Eurotrip'."

Joan Rivers: Waiting for the Pope to emerge on the balcony in a white gown. Doubt he'll be singing "Don't Cry for Me Argentina." A missed opportunity!"

Will, you are the Sister Ann (Garefino) of the SPS Forum. ;)

If that reference goes over anyone's head, re-listen to the commentary for "Do the Handicapped Go To Hell?" and "Probably". Then read this post again and you'll laugh.
