Is anybody on here anti-censorship?

Postby Hannafechik98 » Fri Mar 23, 2018 6:58 pm

I found this thing on South Park and Family Guy on Debate.org

http://www.debate.org/opinions/should-f ... in-the-usa

Why are people having his debate? These shows aren’t even for children. They’re also saying they’re a bad influence on everyone not just kids. Yes anybody who clearly takes it too seriously, but these shows are %100 percent fiction. I mean, come on, will it take that much to explain to these people that banning something for their own sensitivities won’t solve anything?

If people want to ban a show, than the majority should be behind the decision. I don't really have that big a deal with South Park and Family Guy. Trump is in office rate now and he hasn't really gone to censor anything except the people after him. I think we are safe rate now from censorship of the media. I know fake news is causing issues and we really don't need fake news at all. I am for some censorship myself. I would vote to make things more watered down. I don't really like pornography and we don't really need shows and movies just showing violence and drug use. Still, the rest of the Western World is allowing this stuff so it makes sense that the people of America will want their media very similar. I'd hate to vote to get rid of South Park but if there was enough evidence that there would be a positive outcome, I may vote that way. I really never think of TV shows and movies being solely responsible for someone's actions. Usually it was someone looking for something to do to get into trouble with and the show just gives them the idea or excuse. I think rap music does influence people to killing others, gets people to use drugs, and become a gangster. But the crimes may still be committed without the music. I think if there was good evidence than most people would vote for censorship yet there isn't. We don't need child porn on our TV's and being sold at stores like in Japan. And we don't need murder videos of people actually killing other people. I mean most people were offended by the Japanese suicide forest video a YouTube personality made, Logan or something. American's do have their threshold for expectable material in our media.

What was the lesson learned in South Park Bigger, Longer, and Uncut? It did have to do with censorship.

The only speech that should be censored is calls for violence against somebody and the "heckler's veto" (that's pre-internet talk for spam).

I'm all for educating people how to vet the information they are presented with so they can make their own decisions about what is fake and was is real. They should also learn something about what goes on in the brain when you read information that contradicts an established opinion. Come to think of it, some folks need to understand the difference between an opinion and a fact, then they can learn about the traps their own brain does to cling to some opinions. If most people are competent at vetting information and content, there is no need for censorship.

What would you guys say about this one? I have not watched so much of Family Guy, but what was said about South Park that none of us would agree with.

My rationale is that most people watch TV like 3 hours a day. So, there is plenty of time for both some South Park and Family Guy. I really don’t watch TV at all, but I catch South Park new episodes. I remember everyone saying Family Guy is boring and random. Others would argue South Park was too childish as the main characters are 9 year old’s. Still its just consumerism. If people didn't like the show it wouldn't be on TV. I'm more interested in hearing about the reboot of Roseanne rate now.

Family Guy is New England and South Park is mountain time. Family Guy is one family starting out and grew some to other neighbors and people of Quahog and South Park started out four families, mainly the sons and has grown to all town members. Family Guy had some more even distribution of female characters to start and where South Park was just the four boys. The video quality started out very different. The time it takes to make an episode is very different. I think Seth McFarland spends all year on Family Guy and now American Dad and I think he is in something new that is kind of not doing well rate now. Matt and Trey are mainly South Park and they spend like 10 weeks plus some time before like a month getting back in the groove. Matt and Trey claim to spend time on the Book of Mormon play but I can't really see how that is that much but they are now putting in some good time with video games based off the show South Park. Matt and Trey have kids and Seth has like a hot wife or something.

I'd really love to help write for either show by Matt and Trey or Seth, they are all pretty cool.

Then I found this:https://forums.catholic.com/t/is-family ... /266601/24

If people try to say try to say “calling it satire and it offends everyone is not an excuse.”, My response would be that some things are not to by questioned or tampered with, and satire is just one of the many. They offend because they can, and you’re either with it or against it.

I personally don’t think it should be up to the viewer to decide what is offensive and when a line has been crossed.

What would say on this?

This thread is morphing into the "Is anybody on here anti-religious?" thread. The last few links I've clicked on are all about the atheism of Seth McFarlane and anti-religious slant in cartoon satire, not aboout censorship, per se.

Sorry, I guess I'm not trans-ginger and don't get these silly movements with little hype. I'm sure there's lots of Facebook pages out there and the like but most of these never trend and most people will never know of them. Matt and Trey pay attention to what is big in the news or what is a comedic trope from their childhood or ones they witnessed.
