Re: The Smurfs Were Blatant Communists

MutualDisdain wrote:I was hoping this episode would play off the fact that the Smurfs were blatant communists, and Cartman would claim they were part of Wendy's administration.

The smurfs were collectivists, each with a specific job in the community. They shared all their food, and resources (probably Smurfette too). They all were lead by a Papa in a red cap, and they vilified the capitalist (Gargamel) who wanted to turn them into gold.

Connecting Smurfs to Communism is not an original idea. I believe this site is the originator of the Smurf/Communism theory:

http://www.iamlost.com/features/smurfs/commies.shtml

Regardless, this episode was priceless. I am a blatant conservative, but even I can't sit through Beck's program. I'm a Red Eye fan with some O'Reilly on the side.

Best of luck for the rest of the season.

I wrote this essay in 1998:

http://jmarcschmidt.com/Smurfs/sociosmurf2.html

I posted it on Geocities 11 years ago, but sadly, Geocities was closed down last month. I put it on my homepage.

There were a couple of other guys making similar allegations about the Smurfs back in the 90s, claiming for instance that 'SMURF' stood for 'Socialist Men Under Red Father', just as Cartman comes up with an acronym to accuse Wendy of wanting to KILL SMURFS in this episode. (The Smurfs actual name is 'Schtroumpf', so that one's unlikely.)

I think Trey did refer to the Smurfs-Are-Communists idea in this episode. Cartman claims Wendy, like Gargamel, wants to kill all Smurfs. Gargamel, in my essay, is a caricature of an ultra-capitalist, exactly the kind of person Cartman/Glenn Beck ought to be defending on his show. Secondly, Cartman supports the Smurfs and their idyllic lifestyle, not realizing he is supporting exactly the kind of 'socialist utopia' he claims Wendy is trying to create at South Park Elementary. This all goes to show the stupidity of the right-wing shock jocks that Cartman is parodying in this episode.

The essay was in a book that was published in the Korean language last year. (http://jmarcschmidt.com/secretskorean.html). I'll be selling the English version at the San Diego Comic-con next year. The essay was accompanied by this illustration: Image

I dont know. I thought this episode was pretty boring. I mean the whole Obama/Wendy thing was pretty lame. The funniest parts were when Butters and his "gang" started harassing Wendy.

4/10

So i watched it a 2nd time..... Im sorry i know what you all were goin for in the first 2.5 minutes but truly..... it sucked it wasent funny it was drawn out and just bumed me out. It wasent enough to ruin the rest of the episode but if i dident like south park as much as i do i woulda turned it off before the 2 min were up.

Nice try, i wouldent recomend doing it again. Unless your finally burnt out and dont care about s.p. anymore.

wow, i went to see avatar today, then i watched this episode again. it's amazing how much they ripped on that movie before it even came out! and i also just noticed how Wendy's book "Going Rouge on the Smurfs" is making fun of sarah palin's book "Going Rouge"

It's funny because Conservatives are fearmongerers just like Cartman.

Thank goodness I'm a Liberal.
