S22E10: "Bike Parade" preshow discussion.

Postby Big-Will » Mon Dec 10, 2018 6:22 am

Episode 2210 - Bike Parade

The Amazon workers are still on strike and now no one is getting their Christmas packages. Despite the chaos at the Amazon Fulfillment Center, the Bike Parade is still on. The boys’ chance of winning is in jeopardy when Kenny resists commercialism in solidarity with the striking workers.

NOW we get to Butters' story. :) But Jeff Bezos needs old technology for some reason, lol. The boys are now competing against both Butters and Larry - mostly Larry, since Butters can't come up with much more to rival Larry's tricycle.

I want to wonder if we'll see any other familiar kids in the parade, but I already know the answer is probably that we'll see other kids animated into the race but that none of them will have significance.

No one's getting their Christmas packages? Maybe Mr. Hankey was right that we should've all been focused on Christmas after all.

Interesting that Kenny is the one resisting commercialism since his dad appears to be one of the leaders of the strike right now, but also curious... "We used to do everything together, just the four of us." Guess the boys won't be coming back together on this one, either. I'm curious if that'll be a story point somehow, or if Cartman's little speech was just there to make us old South Park fans feel old. Probably the second one.

Press image we have tonight is a little silly but doesn't shed much light on the story.

It's a miracle!
Stephen gets a promotion at work and a big surprise at home.

Now I see why Jeff Bezos is using old technology: He's giving Butters everything he needs to win first place in the bike parade. :)

This is the kind of preview clip I really like. Sheds more light on the episode. Bezos wants Stephen to win so he can keep him employed and keep things running. I suppose this means if the boys beat Butters, it saves the town? Might be an incentive for Kenny to get back behind the wheel. :)

Interesting to see Alexa again; wonder if we might get a token callback to last season's episode on them? I'm still a sucker for that kind of non-linear continuity the show seems to struggle with. It could be funny to see, say, the boys planning in Cartman's room and Bezos has to deal with a hundred Alexas' feedback.

I'm back to my old tricks, oops. You know I don't seriously expect this stuff though, right? I'm just trying to have fun.

Second press release image is up, and boy! Butters' hexacycle looks hard to beat! Any fancier and he'd be driving a miniature train! All blinged out and sh*t. His ride is PIMPED!

Butters' new bike has a "bitch seat" (to use the parlance of motorcycle people). Then there's a cooler. Then there's a trailer; a trailer with what appears to be a mesh enclosure, thus implying it's for a pet to ride in.

The teaser for the finale implies a lot about one of its themes. I think we are seeing how the corporate overlords utilize big data and mass surveillance to reward compliance and punish dissidence. The workers strike and they are punished by using all the data about their buying against them. A scab like Stephen is rewarded in a reverse, but similar fashion.
I could be reading too much into a trailer, but I think it hints at plot element to the South Park universe that will carry over into next season: class struggle. The Stotch's get launched into a 'higher' social standing and that creates a permanent rift between Butters and the rest of the guys.
Or maybe I'm completely wrong and Stephen's sense of morality overcomes his greed and desire for stability and we sort of 'reset' at the end. Though I would find it more compelling to see an 'average' guy like Stephen Stotch compromise his own sense of ethics enough times over small decisions that add up over time until one day, he has become The Man. A series of events where one acts in their own self interest creates the net effect of turning a person into someone who steps on others for their own gain and feels justified in doing so. I'm suggesting you could have Butters' dad slowly slide into rich assh*le villainy in a way that echos Butters own creation of Professor Chaos. More generally, it plays into the arc of the antihero that was so popular with Breaking Bad or House of Cards.

What the hell is Jeff Bezos suppose to be like? he reminds me of like an old sci-fi movie alien. I also pickup some sort of vibe from fahrenheit 451. I didn't like the character at first but now he is growing on me. He is so sneaky with a master plan always at work. I wonder what will happen to the character? He does have a butt on the back of his head. I think he may be killed off as he is too villainous.

It's a reference to an episode of the original Star Trek.
