What are your internet "necessities"?

Postby BRMBug » Fri Apr 18, 2008 11:23 am

In light of Over Logging, I started to think of what I wouldn't be able to "do without" if the internet was down, and wondering what other people's necessities... e-cessities? ... i-cessities? are.

For me, it seems to be this place, the Beetle club, and Wikipedia. The first thing I do when I start my computer up is check my mail, and if there's anything from the club, I check messages on the boards there. Then I come here and see what's going on.
I also use Wikipedia to "fact check" myself, and use Wiktionary to make damn sure I'm spelling something right when I know it's right, and Firefox is telling me otherwise.

Other sites I visit frequently (going by order of my bookmarks) include Weebls-Stuff, Adult Swim, Gordon Keith, YouTube, ebay, James Urbaniak's LJ; Voucher Ankles, Jackson Publick's: Publick Nuisance, Left-Handed Toons, Dallas Morning News' TV grids (the TV guide in the Sunday paper is often wrong here), I Can Has Cheezburger?, and Justin Winokur's diaryland blog.

So what are your "e-cessities"?

I check my yahoo mail, then my school mail, then Pro Football Talk, followed by the Orange and Brown report, then College Football Talk, then explosm.net, ebaumsworld, College Humor, and Facebook. Then sometimes I come on here.

Without the internet, I couldn't do my job. I use aerial/satellite photos from Google Maps/Live Maps every single day. And then there's the county GIS browsers that are an invaluable resource. I would not be the awesome cartographer I am without the net.

And then, like Randy, where would I get my porn? Plus, I'd have to pay for it. What an absurd notion! Going to some kind of store, having to interact with real people, and then paying money to get porn? It's barbaric, I say!

You read it! You can't unread it!

Adult Swim
Musician's Friend

And a bunch of other assorted pornographic and music-related websites.

I couldn't live without MSN.

And here, and my university's website because we pretty much need to check our e-mail every waking hour. D:

But I have lived without internet, and I lived :)

when i turn on my computer the first thing i do is log on to msn, than check my hotmail, school email and gmail
but i need internet for school a lot aswel: we have a digital learning platform called 'toledo'. it basicly shows all the courses i'm enrolled in. so i can click on them and downlaod parts of the course, check announcements from my professors or upload papers and other work that needs to be handed in.
i also use it to find the emailadresses of my classmates (which can vary depending on the course).

but during a schoolweek, msn is THE MOST important thing, because i'm renting a student room (in Bruges), and all my friends and boyfriend are at home, so it's the easiest way to communicate with them on a daily bases.

other stuff: read the newspaper, watch silly vids, come here, other random stuff

i could do without the internet though (as long as i have my phone and/or my boyfriend with me)

its nice to do without, not feeling the presure coming with school and general time presure
