Well, I celebrate (correct spelling): Chanukah (it is phonetically correct from the Hebrew. Ask Cartman's Phonic Monkey).

The spelling of "Hanukkah" was created by the greeting card companies.

Why do you always criticize that Jewish holiday by the way it's spelled? It doesn't matter if it's spelled "Hanukkah" or "Chanukah", it's all the same. Here's a link for this:

Still the same as it ever was.

1. Wiki, once again is incorrect.

2. Phonetically, from the hebrew, it is a sound that is not in English. We write it in English as "Ch" but it is really a gargling sound.

Using an "H" implies an "H" sound without the gargling. It was the greeting card companies that changed it to "H" and it bothers me, because in hebrew it is not an "H" but a gargling sound. Since when can greeting card companies change the pronunciation of a foreign language (hebrew)?

As to Wiki, for Wiki to merely say both spellings are correct without more gives legitimacy to what the greeting card companies did. That's why as you said:

It does matter. It comes from the hebrew, and it does NOT start with an "H"

Unlike Wiki, I'll give you more. In the Hebrew, Chanukah is pronounced with the letter "chet." The chet's "ch" sound is not enunciated like the "ch" in child, rather it's a guttural, throaty sound – like the "ch" in Johann Bach – which does not have an English equivalent. The letter "H" is close, but it's not really it.

Edit: Actually, I am not criticizing the Jewish holiday (really a "festival; the festival of lights); I am criticizing how the loss of the pronunciation has occurred, not through common usage and a slackening of the hebrew language, but the fact that greeting card companies changed the spelling.

Chanukah occurred in history around 140-139 B.C.E. (before the common era), and greeting card companies changed it almost 2,000 years later in the mid-1970's.

Edit: the double "K" in "hanukkah" was an error from the greeting card companies. Phonetically, transliteration from the hebrew, it is cha-nu-kah. Not cha-nuk-kah; no "double "k"".
