I live in one of the most diverse cities in the country, though it should be noted that despite all the different backgrounds here in San Jose, there's certain parts of town where certain people (i.e. whites, Asians, Hispanics) live in larger numbers than others. There's Lutheran, Mormom, Baptist, and Catholic churches everywhere, and a few mosques and synagogues. Despite all this, almost 3/4 of the people I know personally aren't religious.

Practically the same here too.... except 3/4 of the people I know do have some sort of religion, and if they don't that's because their parents never put one upon them...

Do you know any Zoroastrians? I do. Cultural diversity is so awesome. :D

I've met one Zoroastrian, one Pagan, and two Jehovah's Witnesses. Truth be told, they weren't very different from anyone else otherwise.

I was surprised how many Atheists were at my old high school.... Almost equal to the Theists! :o

(SMALL high school, 18 enrolled. Alternative school. I never did homework, so my grades were bad. But hey, I got f*cking GOOD state test scores, so f*ck anyone that calls me an idiot.)

Numerous studies and reports have shown that the atheist population in the United Stated doubled in the last decade. And this only takes into account people who are openly atheist. Of course, younger people are far more likely to be atheist than older people.

Keep in mind atheism refers to what one believes. Agnosticism refers to what one knows. And on that note, it should be pointed out that everyone is agnostic. To claim that you know for a fact that a god exists, you're just blowing smoke out your ass and forgetting to use that big pink thing in your head.

The United States is far more religious than any large, developed country in the western world, but it'll soon change.

Oh, I know, I made a chart.

(I know Gnostism does not mean 100% knowledge. I use it because the Atheists that claim to "know" there is no God are referred to Gnostic Atheists...)

She'ssoCool, I have been noticing it too. I have been noticing Atheists acting like that for a few years on this board. Kind of annoying..I believe that they, and everyone else has the right to believe the way they want, but when they say something I think is condensending to people who don't believe as they do, I turn into a bitch.

EvilCupcake, I used to live in a town like yours. What you should do is move out first chance you get.

Someone accused Niels of being a troll, I think. Maybe I misread what was said.I sometimes get tired from work, and misread what is said online. .Niels, I have a question, and I do not mean this as an attack. I know I have never really talked to you about the subject of religion, but we have known eachother on this board for a long time, but I seem to remember you not being an Athiest. Was that accurate? And if so, did you really change your beliefs, or are you here to cause mischief? And do some of your friends who I also know still not really like posting here anymore because of all the stupid debates?

In my anti-religious ramblings, I steer clear of blatant ad hominem name calling in favor of being callously dismissive. My attempts to speak in general terms sometimes come off as insulting. I accidentally create the impression that I think other people are stupid for believing what they believe when that is not the case. I just think they need to apply a little critical thinking to some of their beliefs. And it's not that I think they don't possess the mental faculties to do so, they just never have. There's a high likelihood they've been misinformed about certain things that would cause them to re-examine why they believe what they believe.

Like so many other topics, it comes down to the simple fact that people are busy. We've got jobs and families and friends all deserving of our time. Who's got time to really examine stuff like religion in enough detail and with enough healthy skepticism to see if it's worth their effort? As social creatures, we are usually not in a hurry to disrupt the fellowship we experience with other like-minded humans. We are also emotional beings and are usually unwilling to pay any attention to anyone we find personally unpleasant. All of these factors and many more influences people's judgment of religion. This includes their own and others'.

I was always atheist, though I used to label myself as an agnostic to avoid confrontations and debates. I've long since passed the point where I care. I also never used to know very much about religion. My parents aren't religious and never talked about it. About two years ago I became more hostile toward organized religion after my ex-girlfriend had stated that neither she nor her family were very comfortable around me because I didn't believe in a god. It's as if they thought I didn't have any morals, or that I'm not charitable, or that I have no incentive to be a good person. This leads me to my next statement here:

I'm not here to cause mischief, and I'm not a troublemaker, but I could seriously think of thousands of better ways to cause mischief than to come on here. I got bored a few days ago and decided to come back and see what's changed in the several years since I've been here. I didn't expect to find anything interesting to talk about, but then I found this thread. I thought it would be perfect to rant about something that I've only recently discovered the full effects of. And I think I should clarify that I'm not against people believing in a god. I'm against the idea that people think organized religion is what'll save their souls.

Pardon my edit here; I forgot to address your last question. I can't speak for my friends, nor do I know why they don't come on here. I remember Shane was on here sometime last year, doing some character fighting threads or something, when he and I were sharing an apartment.

There really isn't a lot of action here anymore, which is probably another reason. There used to be so many new threads and posts per hour, you wouldn't know where to post next.
