Funny, I literally just said that on the random thread there.

(Told them I would be on there more if THEY were on there more...)

In our progressive society, you should be able to believe in whatever makes you happy.
or not believe in anything

It's a personal thing. f*ck what people think about it.

Well, Triple, I have to say, if someone who believes differently than yourself, does not ram their beliefs around everyone's throat, and doesn't harm people because of their beliefs, and they don't make voting choices you are against, then I think you have no place to say they should be more critical of your beliefs. You would be surprised how many people with beliefs you do not agree with do not vote for things you consider bad, or how many do not harm people, or discriminate against people who believe differently. And that is why I agree with Tbird who just said that whether someone believes or disbelieves it should be their own choice. You say you think that people who have some type of spiritual or religious beliefs just never have the time to think critically about what they believe? Well do you know everyone in the world and what they think? How do you know that is the case? Most intelligent people know that there are alot of points of view in the world, and many people do examine other points of view, but may still keep their own. It is really ironic that you said that you talk about people who believe differently than yourself like they are stupid without meaning to, then go and say what kinda sounds like you are saying that if everyone had the time to think critically they would realize that you are right..Maybe you didn't mean it that way, but that is how it came out.

Niels, I admit when you used to post here all the time I didn't get to know you very well. I knew your ex better, and I knew her point of view on religion. By the way, and this is nothing against her, I haven't even heard from her in awhile, I am sorry that things worked out that way with her for you. I am neutral in that situation, but when things like that happen in a relationship, it sucks. . I am not going to name names, but I have talked to a few of your friends in the past on IM, it seemed like they don't really like the religion debates on here..Unfortunately, they seem to be almost the only action on this board. We need to find a way to change that. If we could think of something more fun, could you see if your other friends would wanna come back, it would be cool to see more old members here more often.

Well sure, I'd love for them to come back. But Shane has his own board that most of them use [I'm one of only two regulars in this 'group' that doesn't use it], even though it doesn't look like any more or less happens over there, and with much fewer people, I might add. They just have this perception that this place sucks as it is. I've met quite a few decent people on here in the few days that I've been back, and despite the lack of activity and familiar users, there really isn't anything wrong with it. I don't know what I could do personally that would make them want to come back, but they do know I'm trying to get some interest in this place. We talk all the time - almost nightly - but if you know who I still talk to, you should get in touch with them too. They might need to hear it from someone else, who uses this board more frequently.

It's not surprising they don't like the religion debates. Of the 7 or so people I talk to, only one or two aren't religious. Though I stumbled upon this thread by accident, it marked my return here because I didn't want to rant about organized religion in their presence anymore - they've had their share already. Something regarding religion makes the national news and they're all "Great, Niels is gonna bring this up in the group chat tonight".

Yeah, I should contact them on IM. Lately, I have only really been talking to Sandoz on IM.Been a little anti social, had a bad roommate, but that person moved out a few months ago, and I am feeling better. Let me tell you something, what was said on South Park about AA is the truth. There are aspects of it that are cult like, I saw that with him turning assh*le on everyone who wasn't part of his AA meetings. Didn't matter to him that I don't do drugs and I would have never drank around him, or our other friend does ever drink. I guess that wasn't sober enough for him, because we don't go to 3 AA meetings a day like he was doing,. Oh well, hope he likes his new friends from his meetings. I wish he had told me about all his issues before I let him move in though.

Oh sh*t, you're Niels and didn't even realize it. You are the one that handles the design of Shane's site?

Well you added the banner I made for the site, and then you changed the design. Now it doesn't fit.

Now I need to make a new one, and it will be your job to fix it. :D

If I can get back on topic, did you hear about the new US postage stamp of Mother Teresa? There's some heat over it because:

1. The U.S. Constitution explicitly mentions in the first amendment: "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof"

2. The U.S. Postal Service maintains a list of twelve criteria for stamps that can be issued. Number nine on the list is "Stamps or stationery items shall not be issued to honor religious institutions or individuals whose principal achievements are associated with religious undertakings or beliefs."

I personally wouldn't care, to be honest. I'm not religious, so I won't buy the stamp. Mother Teresa was a great humanitarian, and I'm not saying she doesn't deserve recognition for it, but the issue here is that the United States Postal Service, operated by the government, is breaking its own rules. Sure, Martin Luther King Jr. was a Baptist minister and Malcolm X was an Islamic spokesperson, but they were known for their civil rights movements. You can argue that Mother Teresa was known for humanitarian work in India, but she was a Mother, and almost definately most remembered for being one. Also, she was very selfless - I don't think she'd be thrilled with having her photo on a postage stamp anyway. She was about doing good for others.

Now of course you could say her 'principal achievement' was humanitarianism, and it's difficult to fully determine that her religion was the basis for her actions, but let's be serious here - it was. Having said this, there's plenty of atheists out there who do similar things for the good of mankind because instead of Christianity, or Islam, or any organized religion, they follow the guidelines of a principle called humanism; this is about the Golden Rule - doing good for others so others will do good for you - so you can enjoy this life and not worry about which afterlife you probably will not end up with.

My point is, most often in the case of religion, the U.S. government loves to break its own rules. This is an indicator, though a somewhat mild one, of corrpution. They are backed and encouraged by uneducated bigots who are under the false impression that the United States was founded upon Christianity.

If they put Mother Teresa on a postage stamp, they would have to make one for Pope John Paul II as well :P

Speaking of stamps, did they ever give one to Princess Diana....there are so many so I would never remember.

That is all because I am not anti-religous.
