I'm afraid we're about to be censored by the FCC

Postby angeldeb82 » Mon Dec 20, 2010 10:37 pm

The FCC is about to take control of the Internet and our connections with it! We need to save the Internet from corporate censorship as fast as possible!

Net Neutrality is a GOOD thing. Basically says that an ISP cannot make multiple tier services. That is to say, Comcast can't charge you another $40 a month just to see streaming videos or access certain sites that are high demand on their network. They can only offer complete access or nothing. No game playing. You pay them for the INTERNET, not the partial net.

The only people against it are right wingers that see conspiracy everywhere and love to hate the government when the Democrats are in charge.

Pip Tweek wrote:For years, large Internet and telecommunications companies have sought to dominate the Internet.

They would like to see a tiered Internet in which some content providers pay a toll to speed delivery of their data, at the expense of others’ (“paid prioritization”).

Since not all content providers will be able to pay such a toll, the result will be a super access highway for websites of large corporations and the wealthy and a winding dirt road for others.

This is bullsh*t. Net Neutrality MUST be preserved. Otherwise, the rich corporate assh*les that already control all other forms of media are going to seize control of the Internet!

If that happens, there will be no future for small-time independent content producers.

It seems our worst fears are being realized! That may mean goodbye, Internet! :cartmancry:

Well there you have it, teabaggers. You want the government out of the way and as little regulation as possible. This is what you get.

I'm confused by all this.

I hear people saying: End of the internet. Government Regulations is bad...Its a greed pot.

Then I hear that companies like Comcast and Verizon will no longer be able to "block" you from sites that they don't like.

However, I also hear this as an incentive to RAISE prices to consumers to paid internet and to BLOCK unrestricted wifi zones....

I also heard rumors that this will make some sites quicker, such as Fox news...and will make some sites, slower...such as Politico etc.

can somebody please explain this sh*t? :?

Funny that it's an Obama pick that's pushing this deal...

From Save The Internet
President Obama pledged to take a “back seat to no one” in support of real Net Neutrality. But now his choice to get the job done, FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski, is pushing a new rule that betrays this promise.

The rule comes up for a vote at the FCC on Dec. 21.If passed in its current form, it would allow phone and cable companies to stifle online innovation, create high-speed lanes exclusively for the biggest companies, and block open access on mobile phones. This is unacceptable, and President Obama needs to call out Chairman Genachowski for failing to deliver real Net Neutrality.

High-speed lanes exclusively for the biggest companies I don't care about - that's been around since the beginning, but the other two are limiting.

I though by "censorship" Debbie was talking about a Thought Police, which this Net Neutrality thing is not about.

Still, even though Obama caved, this fake Net Neutrality deal is still more in line with what the teabaggers say they want.

What Pip Tweek said. ^

Trust me.... Just ask SS (if he ever comes here again), I don't give a sh*t what Obama said, he has proven to just be an extreme pussy that caves to everything the Republicans want. I gave him LOTS of slack seeing his opposition is insane nut jobs, but when that is your enemy you should have no trouble calling them out. Your arguments against them can be easily understood by sane people. Instead he caved to them.

Saying Obama or his appointees approve/cave means that this isn't a tally in the teabagger box is wrong. This was their position and they won it. I don't back a horse in this race, I back ideas.

ALSO

I think the title of this thread needs to be changed to: I'm afraid the FCC is going to let the Internet be f*cked over by the telecoms.

I can tell you that the television industry does NOT want such a thing as net neutrality. The reason why is because when they have carriage disputes with cable systems (Be it Comcast, Time Warner, etc) they know that the first thing people are going to do is go watch their shows online on websites such as this one, using an ISP operated by the same cable system they are disputing with.

An example was ESPN. ESPN operates an internet TV station called ESPN3. Because they were in dispute with Time Warner Cable, ESPN3 was not available to Time Warner/Roadrunner customers. They signed an agreement, our cable rates skyrocketed $5+ for each service, and now we get to watch ESPN3 on the computer.

There is no such thing as net neutrality and there never will be. The future is censorship. Some organization be it the ISP, the website and their dispute with the ISP or the government not wanting you to see something, it can and will be blocked with little or no effort.

Obama caving on an important issue. Hmm...where have I seen this before? Oh yeah, almost everywhere. -_-

Fuck the corporations. If capitalism is so great, why does it just let this happen? I'm not saying we need total socialism - because we don't - but it's clear that we're being too loose with corporate tycoons.

So it's either government interference or corporate control.... we want our freedom, just don't want to have to pay for it. Maybe we should make our own Internets so that we can have REAL freedom of information....

Come to think of it, I wonder how much really is censored from us....

Type in a few controversial words, like pro-anorexia or something like that, and you're taken to "how to stop eating disorders" sites. Something going on there.
