Would you "free solo" a large mountain for $5 million?

Postby Ichben » Tue Apr 26, 2011 3:29 pm

What I am trying to say is if a corporation called "The Sombra Corporation" came to you and told you "We will give you $5 million dollars if you can free solo(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Free_solo_climbing) the The Nose (El Capitan). The corporation will give you a year to prepare for this feat. You will stay in cabin in Yosemite national park with a few other trainers to train you. You may have visitors and you will be on film. This will be, in essence, a reality tv show, staring you, the trainers and "The Nose."

On the day of the climb you you will be given technology to allow you to communicate with your trainers or anybody else from the ground. Your climb will be filmed and if you reach the top you will receive the money. But if you mess up or slip, well, I think you know what will happen."

Well folks, what would you do in this situation. Would you risk your life by free soloing "The Nose"? As for me personally I am still on the fence. I just don't know if I would do it or not.

Nope, not worth it.

Especially the scenario you laid out. One year to go from no climbing experience to summitting one of the world's tallest cliffs? Pass.

Unless of course, I can have Spock's rocket boots from the opening scene of Star Trek V.

It sounds really effin' cool, but I'm gonna have to pass. It'd take me a couple of years to prepare physically for it, and even then I don't know if I could handle it mentally. Not that I exactly have a problem with heights or anything... Well, I could stand on the edge of the Sears Building, as long as there was a railing. But even something as high as the peak of the roof of my house gives me pause. (yes, partially because I've already fallen once from half that distance and fractured my arm.)

Nope, $5 mill don't do you a whole lot of good when you're dead. Would buy you one hell of a funeral though.

Nope, gotta be the boots. Because Kirk was free climbing El Capitan in that scene.

Hey, why not. I'd do it. I'd even do it for no money.

Well, I would but unfortunately, I don't know you, so I'm not sending you my e-mail address. Sorry, but for all I know, you could be some guy trying to access my bank account.

I'm sorry about your arm Mr. Bug, but you shouldn't let that stop ya man, you know the ole saying, no pain no gain...but I guess the important question is is the amount of pain you endure really worth the gain?

It's amazing how some people can't recognize sarcasm, it really is.
