Solar Eclipse 2017

Postby triplemultiplex » Sun Jul 30, 2017 3:26 am

We have an excellent solar eclipse coming on August 21st in the United States. This is going to be a good one; best since 1979.

A huge swath of the country is going to see it, but only a narrow band arcing from Oregon to South Carolina will get to see "totality". 2+ minutes of the moon completely blocking out the sun. If you are anywhere near this track, take the day off and effing go. It might be a once in a lifetime experience. The southern tip of Illinois will experience the longest period of occlusion.

I plan on being somewhere in Nebraska to see the eclipse. Less chance of clouds out there on the prairie.

I remember being in middle school and there was a partial solar eclipse so they brought everyone out to the athletic fields to check it out with the little pinhole viewer. It was interesting but not amazing. This total eclipse will be. No need to poke a round hole in cardboard to see this one.

And don't worry, I'm positive it has nothing to do with The Universe's opinion of Donald Trump.

Not seeing it in Southern California. But, Southwest Airlines are touting five different flights that will be flying in the center zone of best viewing in the U.S., but at 35,000 feet! Here's the details:

Southwest flight 1375 -- Seattle to St. Louis (9:05am)
Southwest flight 1368 -- Portland to St. Louis (9:05am)
Southwest flight 1577 -- Denver to St. Louis (10:20am)
Southwest flight 301 -- Denver to Nashville (10:20am)
Southwest flight 1969 -- Denver to Atlanta (9:50am)

And the next one like it won't happen until August 12, 2045, so don't stay inside and miss this one. It'll be visible in every state, just not total in every state. It should still get noticeably darker in most places, though.

Actually, the next solar eclipse will be in 2024. But right now it's happening where I live, so I'll only see a partial eclipse with my welding mask for the event. Reminds me of the music video for "Ordinary Day" by Vanessa Carlton.

Still the same as it ever was.

Yep, there is an eclipse in 2024, but the next one like this one, where it crosses the entire country, won't be until 2045.

I was at college and looked at it for like a second without any protection. I could have waited in line as there was binoculars and a telescope and they had glasses to pass out but I had work to do.

I scored some clear skies out in the sand hills of western Nebraska so I got to see it all. Cool experience. I'm glad I made the trip. Traffic got a little nuts, but it was still worth it.
