I voted for "I really don't care much". Why? Simple, we don't have WalMart here. But from what I've heard/read, it's better that we didn't have one. Tell me I'm lucky

You are...so very very lucky!! Even here in Lincoln, Nebraska we have one of these evil little pimples of the world. In Nebraska! I told some one from Georgia where I lived and they thought Nebraska was somewhere up by Europe.

Why the heck do people have problems with Walmart? Whoopie a chain of stores that sells sh*t cheap. I've found them highly useful and not everything they sell is cheap. Especially when it comes to computers. Best Buy is the leader in cheap computers.

Walmart being cheaper:

Take my favorite candy Sour Patch Kids for example. They sell them for .97

everywhere else $1.99

Thats low prices. Especially for what its worth. A little bag of candy isn't worth $1.99

Now onto Walmart being more expensive:

This computer was bought at Best Buy for $349. It has 512MB RAM. 120GB HD. And a CD RW/DVD Drive in addition to a printer and monitor.

At Walmart, they have 80GB, ONLY a CD RW and no monitor/printer for $499

At Best Buy, the people working there are extremely rude.

At Walmart, the people working there are usually friendly.

At Walmart, CDs cost $13.99-$14.99

At Best Buy CDs cost between $8 and $13 on average.

We don't see people bitching about Best Buy.

Then there's Target, ShopKo, K-Mart, etc. They're everywhere too but nobody bitches about them.

Its just their size. Since they're so big, people like to bitch.

Just like Clear Channel Communications, Starbucks, Borders, etc. Small companies. Grew big. Once they grew big, people start bitching.

Now as for the people that work for Walmart, I can see why. But almost any store is going to have work related issues. We got a locally owned grocery store that gets union picketers.

I don't really care about WalMart (or Asda as it's called in England). I mean, it's just a store.

SOME reason? Hearing announcements in another language angered you and you don't know why?!

Here's a good reason to hate them--UNION-BUSTING:

Wal-Mart set to shut doors on newly unionized Quebec store
By MARINA STRAUSS
RETAILING REPORTER, GLOBE AND MAIL
Thursday, February 10, 2005, Page B1

Wal-Mart Canada Corp. will close its first unionized store in Jonquière, Que., in the spring, saying it wasn’t able to reach a first contract that would allow the outlet to be profitable.
The closing is a setback for the United Food and Commercial Workers, which has been trying for more than two years to organize a union at a Wal-Mart and, just three weeks ago, was successful in winning certification at a second store in St-Hyacinthe, Que.

The union will file unfair labour practices charges with the Quebec Labour Relations Board because the closing is "clearly a violation of the workers' right to join a union," UFCW national director Michael Fraser said last night.

The world's largest retailer, Wal-Mart has been union-averse. [...]

The decision suggests that Wal-Mart is determined to return to its non-union status, said Richard Chaykowski, a professor at Queen's University's School of Policy Studies in Kingston, Ont. "It's pretty clear, in terms of labour relations, that Wal-Mart has been set back on its heels by the success of the unionization drives."

Wal-Mart is so vehemetly anti-union that they use their vast resources to kee the store that way. When they can't, they always close a store that becomes a union shop, ususally in a week. They would rather fold than pay their employees a livable wage or have a voice.

I worked @ Wal-Mart last summer, and, while most retail places don't want unions, Wal-Mart makes it a obsession to keep unions out.

Of all of the reasons to hate Wal-Mart, this one is it for me.

Wal-Mart's anti-labor track record extends far beyond thier stores. Wal-Mart puts tremendous pressure on it's foreign suppliers to really screw thier workers. All that cheap crap is put together by what amounts to indentured servants in sh*tty countries that surpress any attempts at unionization. And don't say "they can just quit" because that's not how the real world works. They can't afford to quit. But they also can't live on what they're paid. It's a sh*tty, sh*tty trap.

There's a tremendous disconnect in this country between people's spending habits and some far flung sweat shop. I know it's hard to worry about working conditions in Uzbekistan or whatever when minimum wage in this country has been stagnant at $5.15/hour since 1994 and people can't afford not to buy the cheap sh*t at Wal-Mart. But at the same time, people don't understand where sh*t comes from. Somebody upthread noted some guy in Georgia thought Nebraska was on the moon or something. That's the same thing. Complete, stupifying ignorance of the world around them. I'm not saying everyone needs to know where every goddamn state is but they should at least recognize one of them when they hear it. Pick up an atlas, for Christ's sake. They're only five bucks at Wal-Mart.

This has hothing to do about the fact that Walmart has the lowest prices or not. And by teh way, the reason that the Walmart can sell everything for so cheap is because they darastically under pay thier workers, not even enough for the workers to provide for a family and they could easily increase the workers wages without even putting a dent in thier income, but they don;'t and they is where they get the money to be able to import more products and sell them for the cheap prices and beat out other stores and make them lose buisiness so that the other stores slowly go out of buisness and they havew to eventually find a job elsewhere, many times ending up at the walmart becuase that is the place that has all the jobs.

Yes, i agree. I think people, especially here in America need to become more aware of things that are going on in the rest of the world, especially people who are of voting age and eligibility. America is currently one of the main powerhouses of the world and yet many citizens of this country are so ignorant, they don't even know one of thier own states! In a country as powerful as America, such a great public ignorance is very dangerous to the country and the rest of the world because of the influence they exert upon it. People that call themselves citizens need to be aware of the issues in the world, because blissful ignorance is really only ok for children. There is a reason that the voting age in America is 18.

Rednecks love the hell out of Walmart. Personally, I'd rather go to Target than hangout with a bunch of country bumpkins!
