Can you hear a train from your house?

I just heard one.

Not at this exact moment, but there's a track about a mile from my house. I can hear them late at night. I feel sorry for the people who live in a new housing development that's been built over there. I don't know who the hell would want to pay 300 grand to live next to some tracks?

I hear another one. They must come every half hour or so. I'm about 1 mile away too, maybe a little closer.

I live near a station but I never hear any trains.

OOOOOOH those damn trains.

They don't go by much in the day. But between 12AM and 6AM when I'm trying to sleep they're by every few hours. Usually when I'm trying to sleep. I live about a mile from the train tracks and they honk those airhorns repeatedly.

Some honk their airhorns softer or do shorter toots overnight. The rest just do a full blown honk usually waking me up or making me have to stop what I'm doing.

The tracks go right through residential neighboorhoods. I can only imagine what it must be like for the houses right next to the tracks.

Once at 3AM I was walking about 2 miles from the train tracks and you could hear the ding noises and the engine of the train that far down the road. Sound must travel really far when its still and quiet.

there's one that comes about during the wee hours of the morning. it's kind of quiet and far away, though, so i actually like how it sounds.

Yeah I can hear it if the windows are open. Im from Philly too and surprised they still use trains.

The tracks are almost 2 miles from my place, but if the window's open or I'm outside, I can hear 'em. They're all down in the Menomonee Valley where there are at-grade crossings. The Canadian National line due west of me is all grade separated; no crossings to toot at. But down in the Valley, CN and Canadian Pacific have busy lines that skirt the south side of downtown before turning south towards the numerous factories between the interstate and the lake.

I live up on a hill and not too far from our valley. There is a set of tracks that go around the south side of the hill, and although they're a good distance away, you can really hear them from here, even at night.

It's not the closest I've ever lived to tracks, though. My first home in Ohio was across from a set of tracks running parallel to the street. I don't remember much about it, since I was a toddler at the time, but from my mother's stories, it was definitely an experience.

There is train tracks right behind my sister's apartment building. Whenever a train goes by the building vibrates like an earthquake.

I live ~1 Km away from a double track railway line. Every 15 - 30 minutes I hear a train pass by. I can hear them pass by very well at night speeding down the line at ~100 Km/h. Sometimes (late) at night, Freight trains pass by and sound their horn.

Yeah, every once and a while I can hear one off in the distance, especially during the summer, when I have the windows open (can’t do that too much during the winter)
