I can't really say who is the BEST, but if I have to choose a favourite.........Stanley Kubrick by a mile. He's a god among movie directors and just my favourite movie directer ever. Second would ex- Monty Python Terry Gilliams, then Miyazaki. "Nausicäa and the valley of the winds" was my favourite of his movies. I haven't seen anything directed by these two Coen brothers, so I can't rate them. Bergman is last on my list - personally can't stand his depressing films. A good movie doesn't have to make the audience want to commit suicide just to proove it's a good movie.

Oooh...I recognize the movie titles, but not the directors. Go figure, I suck with names.

id go for kubrick, his ""2001: a space odysse" was just TOO f*cked up. the whole film is so incredible weird. it is the definition of weirdness, actually. but i still love it!
and, of course, gilliam would be my second. twelve monkeys is great.
but i dont find tarantino anywhere; he belongs among these others, too!

Well, first I'd like to mention that Bergman isn't all depressing. He's had some really spectacular films. And he's Swedish. Not French. SWEDISH.

And Tarantino's really overrated. Sorry, but that's my opinion. He's good, but he's no where near as original as everyone says he is.

I also think Tarintino is f*cking awesome..One of my favorite directors.

I did vote for Kubrick though because I love The Shining and A Clockwork Orange.

Miyazaki. I love animation.

But this is a biased poll, since it's not the top 10 directors of all time (Scorsese, anyone? Tarantino?), and it's not limited to a certain genre.

As much as I love Kubrick, he was a bastard in real life. So my vote goes to Mr. Gilligam, especially as M and T love the dude and i just watched Life of Brian.
