question for the suburban americans: did y'all really move like the kids in major boobage?

Postby gnawz » Tue Mar 28, 2023 11:39 pm

Im rewatching this episode and as a city kid who isn't from america, i'm curious to know — did any of y'all from american towns like south park chase highs in weird ways (you know how they allude to it in south park — huffing paint, all the way up to cat pee like in this ep) when you were kids around the boys' ages? i'm just wondering how contextually true to life/'relatable' this ep is for the average american (i know that's a broad term, you know what i mean) feels kind of lost on me — we normally just waited to start binge drinking at age 12 where i'm from

Well the whole cat pee angle to that episode is generally skewering the moral panic Americans are subjected to on a fairly regular basis by the news or social media about the last "drug fad" parents should worry about. Whether is huffing glue, snorting bath salts, or butt-chugging alcohol; they are all effectively imaginary trends popularized by media to get everyone scared enough to read/watch a particular outlet. They hear about some one off, freaky-sounding incident and unscrupulous producers and editors frame it as "The dangerous new trend every parent needs to know about!!"

Ironically, the very act of elevating these obscure incidents as supposed "nationwide trends" is shown to far more likely inspire bored teenagers somewhere to try it for real; something they never would have even heard of if not for some sleazy fake news article inventing a hazardous trend for more eyeballs.
Pour booze in my ass? Gross! But the news said it gets you drunk way faster so I dare you try it!

This is exactly what they have happen with Kenny where he only tries cheesing after he sees it on the news.

So in that sense, the Cat Pee episode is extremely relatable for most Americans.

Fifty years ago, I was 8 years old, and I didn't know anything about drugs or getting high, so no way did I move like the kids did in "Major Boobage." I didn't learn about that stuff until middle school, and I saw how it affected some kids... not for me!
