Celebrities' responses to being lampooned on South Park

Postby ulrilra » Sun Aug 16, 2009 7:22 am

Celebrity reactions. How do the celebrities depicted on South Park respond to their depictions? I've put together a list of episodes and the celebrities in them, mainly focusing on the celebrities that didn't provide their voices. I put down the responses I could find. If you can find any other responses by celebrities that I've missed, post them here and I'll put them up. I'm still missing some of the potential best. Like, what did Ben Affleck think about getting a hand job from a nine year old in Season 7 Episode 5: "Fat Butt and Pancake Head"? What did Rob Reiner think of being portrayed as a controlling, gluttonous slob in 0713-"Butt Out"? Did Sylvester Stallone like the parody of him in 0903-"Wing" that had a man follow him around to translate his accent into English? It's fine too if the celebrity was only referenced. I'd like to know what George Clooney thought of his acceptance speech smug cloud, for instance.

South Park The Movie: Bigger, Longer, and Uncut

  • Brian Boitano

http://www.ew.com/ew/article/0,,20167241,00.html
Q:Of course you know EW readers want to talk about ''What Would Brian Boitano Do?'' What was your reaction to the South Park song? Did you see the movie, or did fans point it out to you?

Brian Boitano: I went by myself to see it.

Q: Why go alone? Because you didn't want anyone there to witness the—

Brian Boitano: [Shouts] ''Goddamn it!'' [Laughs] I just wanted to go alone. I'm in this crowded movie theater, and I'm like, Oh my God, don't trash me. Don't trash me. Like I remember that moment when Stan just stops and goes, ''What Would Brian Boitano Do?'' He's talking about me, and everyone's laughing. It was just surreal.

Q: Have you ever met South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone?

Brian Boitano: Never. I still want to meet those guys. It's funny: Brian Graden [now president of MTV Networks Music Group and LOGO] came up to me at the Torino Olympics. He's like, ''I have a confession to make. I'm the one that commissioned ''The Spirit of Christmas"'' [the video Christmas card that ultimately led to South Park]. I'm like, ''Youuuuu.'' He's friends with Matt and Trey, and he's tried to arrange twice for us to have dinner together in L.A., and neither of our schedules worked out. But my manager couldn't decide what to get me for Christmas two years ago. She has a relationship with their lawyer because I had to get their permission to use ''What Would Brian Do?'' on T-shirts for charity. So then she asked, ''Hey, can you have the guys send a picture to Brian for Christmas?'' So they sent me this really cool thing with my little character on it, and it said, ''South Park loves Brian Boitano.'' And then Matt wrote, ''I love you!'' and Trey wrote, ''We love you! Thank you so much!'' 'Cause I did [an interview] for VH1 Goes Inside: South Park. [Laughs] I think I'm probably the only well-known person who wanted to do it. If they'd ragged on me, I wouldn't have.

Source: San Francisco Chronicle Interview
http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.c ... H2SKR1.DTL
Excerpt from interview: "It's become such a part of my life," the real Boitano said, sitting in a pizza parlor last week, not far from his home on Russian Hill. "Kids who don't know who I am, or what I did at the Olympics, meet me and think I'm cool because I'm in 'South Park.' "

He has never spoken with the show's creators, and he didn't know what to expect when he heard about the song. Mindful that the show eviscerates the famous, Boitano went to see the movie alone. He left feeling very lucky.

"They did 'Inside South Park' on VH-1, and I was the only sort of celebrity person that they could get to do it," he said. "Nobody else wanted to do it because (the South Park creators) always picked on them."

0108 - Starvin' Marvin

  • Sally Struthers

Image

Source: Season 1 Commentary
Trey Parker: Apparently Sally Struthers was a fan of South Park up until she saw this episode and it really bummed her out and what we heard was that she cried for like, days...But, um, it's like, dude, you really set yourself up if you're going to be that fat and go on the air and talk about...[laughs] That's how fat she is.

112 - Mecha-Streisand

  • Barbra Streisand

Image

Babs: I enjoy satire and parody and I loved the movie In & Out. It made me laugh. It wasn't mean-spirited. But I wonder if shows like South Park and Beavis and Butt-head don't add to the cynicism and negativity in our culture, especially in children.

  • Leonard Maltin

Image

Matt Stone: [Leonard Maltin's] teenage kids were big South Park fans and they thought he was way cooler now that he was featured in South Park.

Bob Saget loved the episode and thought it was very funny.

Bob Saget: I come out and I look like Beavis and Butthead meet Frankenstein or something. One of my daughters is like, "They're not wrong." [pause] Those f*ckers.

Q: Have you seen the South Park episode?

Russell Crowe: Yes, I've seen it.

Q: You know these guys?

Russell Crowe: Yes, I do.

Q: You knew they were doing this?

Russell Crowe: Yes, I did.

Q: Did you cooperate with it?

Russell Crowe: Um, they didn't ask me to cooperate with it.

Q: And what do you think?

Russell Crowe: Um [pause] I think, um [pause] that they are very, very funny men and I wish them god speed and I hope they continue to do what they're doing.

Q: So you found a certain amount of humor in it?

Russell Crowe: You know, for me a lot of it's...If there's something for me to learn from it, it's, um, the analogist thing, you know? Cause I did think the whole thing was a fight. I did think my whole career was a struggle.

Q: Hey Michael, did you ever see your portrayal on South Park?

Michael Dorn: Yes, I did. I loved it! I'm a big South Park fan anyway, and I wish they had called because I would have loved to have used my voice.

  • Steven Spielberg & George Lucas

Trey Parker: We did get a letter from Mr. Spielberg for this episode. We still to this day do not know if he was pissed off or he was-

Matt Stone: It's kind of backhanded. He says basically now I feel finally like I've arrived - I'm one of the villains in South Park. I love your guys sharp, witty sense of humor, blah blah blah. But there's something kind of crappy about the letter.

Trey Parker: There's something that seemed like he was pissed off. But I can't say that because maybe he wasn't.

Matt Stone: But it really seemed like it.

Source: http://www.crankycritic.com
http://www.crankycritic.com/qa/stevenspielberg.html
Q: Did you see the South Park where they spoofed you and Lucas?

Steven Spielberg: I loved it. It was great! [laughter] George Lucas sent it to me and I watched it with my kids and my kids loved it and I called George back and I said 'George they got one thing wrong.' And George said 'What's that?' And I said 'It's usually you saying to me Stop Steven! Turn around! Do what I say! And they gave me the power over you!', and I said "Man, I love that so much. I never have the power over you!" I wrote a letter to the boys and I said it was great and really funny and 'Thanks for the great idea of remastering and changing Raiders of the Lost Ark. Y'know without that show I never would have thought of that and now George and I are busy remaking Raiders of the Lost Ark. I appreciate the suggestion.'

Q: You know if you write to them it only encourages them . . .

Steven Spielberg: Exactly! That's OK!

0615 - The Biggest Douche in the Universe

  • Rob Schneider

Image

Source: About.com interview
Rob Schneider: I loved it. That was genius. I thought the only thing, they were too nice to me...When you’re spoofed by the best people in the business, that’s an honor.

0705 - Fat Butt and Pancake Head

  • Jennifer Lopez

Image

Source: Season 7 commentary
Trey Parker: Five months [after we made the episode], we heard from some friends that were on a set of a Jennifer Lopez movie she was doing and they said that when she would walk by, some of the lower people like the PAs would say, 'Oooh tacos, I love tacos...' And that she got so mad and had to fire people...But she kept hearing it in the distance, like, people saying stuff from this episode and that made me SO happy.

  • Paris Hilton

Q: Do you have a sense of humor about the parodies of you such as the South Park episode?

Paris Hilton: I haven't seen it, but when people copy you, that's like the most flattering thing, so whatever people can say, I just laugh about it. It doesn't matter to me.

0903 - Wing

  • Wing

All the music sung by "Wing" in the episode is sung by the actual singer, Wing (http://www.wingmusic.co.nz). She sent Matt and Trey a letter of thanks for the increase in sales she got following the episode's airing.

0912 - Trapped in the Closet

  • Tom Cruise

Image

Tom Cruise: First of all, could you ever imagine sitting down with anyone? I would never sit down with someone and question them on their beliefs. Here's the thing: I'm really not even going to dignify this. I honestly didn't really even know about it. I'm working, making my movie, I've got my family. I'm busy. I don't spend my days going, 'What are people saying about me?'

Student: How did you feel about your appearance in the South Park episode, 'A Million Little Fibers' where you discover that Towelie's autobiography is actually concocted?

Geraldo Rivera: [laughs] Thank you, oh my god, that's the drill! [laughs] My South Park appearance...You know, I've been several characters on South Park.
- He says nothing more about South Park but goes on to talk about Saturday Night Live and other comedy shows.

1006 - Manbearpig

  • Al Gore

Image

http://www.hypedworld.com/politics/that ... much-more/
Q: I was wondering if you could elaborate on your long term strategy for spreading ManBearPig awareness.

Al Gore: [laughs] It's unbelievable how many comments I got after that South Park episode played. I still get comments on it. It's unbelievable. Not quite as many comments as I got for my role as a disembodied head on Futurama. That was a big win. [laughs]

1010 - Miss Teacher Bangs a Boy

  • Duane "Dog" Chapman

Image

Source: Duane "Dog" Chapman's autobiography, You Can Run But You Can't Hide
Duane Chapman: One fun aspect of having my hit show was to be spoofed on South Park. You know you've really made it when they include you in their show. I loved Cartman being Dog the Hall Monitor, and if you've seen the episode, you know their depiction of Beth was classic. She was featured as a big cartoon circle with two huge boobs. All you could see were tiny little eyes sticking out above her cleavage. Our whole family laughed when we saw the show.

1012 - Go God Go

  • Richard Dawkins

Image

Richard Dawkins: Finally, I have repeatedly been asked what I think of South Park. I’m buggered if I like being portrayed as a cartoon character buggering a bald transvestite. I wouldn’t have minded so much if only it had been in the service of some serious point, but if there was a serious point in there I couldn’t discern it. And then there’s the matter of the accent they gave me. Now, if only I could be offered a cameo role in The Simpsons, I could show that actor how to do a real British accent.

1105 - Fantastic Easter Special

  • William A. Donohue

Image

Source: New York Times Interview
http://www.nytimes.com/2009/05/15/nyreg ... nohue.html
From interview: Asked about that, Mr. Donohue walked to a frame, prominently displayed on a shelf, containing a still from the 2007 episode of the animated television series “South Park” in which Mr. Donohue was parodied: In the picture, Mr. Donohue is shown wearing the pope’s tall hat, his unmistakable receding hairline and square-framed black glasses captured, uncannily, by the pen of the artist.

“In the episode, they have me overthrow the pope because the pope is a wimp, and then I take over the church and give it some guts,” he said, making a fist.

Pope Donohue also sentences Jesus to death for heresy. Mr. Donohue does not mention that.

“But in the end, Jesus kills me,” Mr. Donohue said with a jolly laugh.

Cinematical: To take a recent example of what people expect from your work, did you see the South Park episode (The Imaginationland Trilogy) that contained a caricature of you?

M. Night: [laughs] I heard about it. I heard it was hilarious.

Cinematical: The government hires you as a consultant and you keep talking about twists. It's interesting, because you really don't have that many twists in your films. There aren't any twists in The Happening. This all came out of The Sixth Sense.

M. Night: This is my hope: That there will be enough movies that you will have to evaluate each movie individually. One day, the commonality will be, "I just like his point of view." He doesn't mean anything specific beyond storytelling. That's the goal. It takes awhile to pound away at that. No matter what, when you hear U2, you think Joshua Tree. There's no way around it. The hope is that you do varied stuff, but a consistency of stuff.

  • Jay Cutler (former quarterback for the Denver Broncos)

From interview: The Broncos quarterback was dissed by Stan on a recent episode of "South Park" when Stan said, upon being introduced to him, "You kinda (stink), but my dad said you might be good someday."

Cutler laughed at the comment Wednesday.

"It was cool," he said. "I thought it was funny. They can make fun of me if they want to."

  • Jimmy Buffett

Jimmy Buffett purportedly liked South Park's satire of him and showed a clip of the episode at his performance in Frisco, Texas. Later, he also posted on twitter regarding the emmy-nominated episode 1303, "Margaritaville", which was named after one of his songs. See here: (http://twitter.com/jimmybuffett/status/2688993488)

Kanye West: SOUTH PARK MURDERED ME LAST NIGHT AND IT'S PRETTY FUNNY. IT HURTS MY FEELINGS BUT WHAT CAN YOU EXPECT FROM SOUTH PARK! I ACTUALLY HAVE BEEN WORKING ON MY EGO THOUGH. HAVING THE CRAZY EGO IS PLAYED OUT AT THIS POINT IN MY LIFE AND CAREER. I USE TO USE IT TO BUILD UP MY ESTEEM WHEN NOBODY BELIEVED IN ME. NOW THAT PEOPLE DO BELIEVE AND SUPPORT MY MUSIC AND PRODUCTS THE BEST RESPONSE IS THANK YOU INSTEAD OF "I TOLD YOU SO!!!" IT'S COOL TO TALK sh*t WHEN YOU'RE RAPPING BUT NOT IN REAL LIFE. WHEN YOU MEET LITTLE WAYNE IN PERSON HE'S THE NICEST GUY FOR EXAMPLE. I JUST WANNA BE A DOPER PERSON WHICH STARTS WITH ME NOT ALWAYS TELLING PEOPLE HOW DOPE I THINK I AM. I NEED TO JUST GET PAST MYSELF. DROP THE BRAVADO AND JUST MAKE DOPE PRODUCT. EVERYTHING IS NOT THAT SERIOUS. AS LONG AS PEOPLE THINK I ACT LIKE A BITCH THIS TYPE OF sh*t WILL HAPPEN TO ME. I GOT A LONG ROAD AHEAD OF ME TO MAKE PEOPLE BELIEVE I'M NOT ACTUALLY A HUGE DOUCHE BUT I'M UP FOR THE CHALLENGE. I'M SURE THE WRITERS AT SOUTH PARK ARE REALLY NICE PEOPLE IN REAL LIFE. THANKS FOR TAKING THE TIME TO DRAW MY CREW. THAT WAS PRETTY FUNNY ALSO!! I'M SURE THERE'S GRAMMATICAL ERRORS IN THIS... THAT'S HOW YOU KNOW IT'S ME!

Actually, George Clooney has been on the show before...as Sparky, Stan's gay dog. So I think he's buddies with Matt and Trey. So I think he was probably thrilled when they used his acceptance speech.
My parents said they'd ground me if I (insert ridiculous stunt here).

I think you forgot about "The Snuke", which lampooned Queen Elizabeth II and Hilary Clinton.

Well, I added them but I'm pretty sure neither commented on the episode. Hillary Clinton was in the middle of her presidential campaign when it aired so it's unlikely that she'd comment on something so silly. And as for Queen Elizabeth:

It's odd how some people are pricks about it and others laugh it off. I mean they were super mean to Al Gore, and he didn't seem to mind.
