They've done this in different ways. Until recently, at least they would've come up with a creative way to parody something in popular television media (Chinpokomon, Cartman's appearance on Maury, lesbian '300 spartans' etc.) Even most of the ones you've mentioned could be seen as such.

However, for the past 3 episodes it's totally blunt and direct; they don't really even change the material around: intervention, nascar, jersey shore. Very uncreative, very boring.

Season 11 was great, but for my money, season 9 was the worst season and season 10 was one of the worst. Season 9's two runs had lots of clunkers(Mr. Garrison's Fancy New Vagina, Erection Day, Ginger Kids), a lot of episodes that don't suck abut are just absurdly forgettable, and only five episodes really worth watching. Season 10 was better, but the last four episodes were bad and there was one massive clunker(A Million Little Fibers).

I thought SP was finished then. I did. But S11 came along and kicked ass. Then 12 and 13, while not great seasons and often times forgettable, had great spots in them and did not have massive clunkers.

The show was at its peak 5-7.

I disagree and agree with some points in this post.

First off, I'm glad we agree that season 11 was a great season. IMO, the best season South Park has ever produced. If you want to use the band metaphor, their best album. The season where everything they touched turned to GOLD.

The Imaginationland Trilogy...Guitar Queer-O ("listen to that video crowd!"), Lice Capades (so creative), With Apologies to Jesse Jackson (a great, thought-provoking commentary on the power of hateful language), Cartman Sucks (classic Cartman), Le Petit Tourette (a great self-referential episode), The Snuke (hilarious 24 parody). Even the weaker episodes were strong overall.

Season 9 wasn't that good, admittedly (I initially remembered it being good but my memory obviously failed), but it's nowhere NEAR being the worst season. The worst season so far has been Season 14. The second worst...13. The third worst...12. Then the opening season. First season sucked (every show's first season isn't that good...they're finding their voice).

I hate all those episodes you mentioned as "clunkers," so we agree there too (Ginger Kids, Erection Day etc.).

Season 10 you're underrating a LOT. It had the following classics: Warcraft episode, Smug Alert! (brilliant liberal attack), Cartoon Wars 1 & 2 (a brilliant mockery of Family Guy), Tsst (classic Cartman). Then it had some decent episodes that weren't great but enjoyable: Go God 1 & 2 (some nice atheist bashing).

10-11 was their prime, IMO. Season 7 only had about 5 classics...Season 6 was poor in general (only had about two great episodes). Seasons 4-5 were brilliant but I still think 10-11 have their number.

Am I the only one who didn't hate A Million Little Fibers? I f*cking hate Towelie, but the Oprah assh*le/vagina scenes were hysterical.

Their best parody was the Lord of the Rings one with the porno tape. GENIUS.

I think the show still has its moments, but it definitely feels like they're hitting ridiculously easy targets lately (for a couple of seasons now), and those are good for a couple of laughs, but they really don't hold up well as half-hour episodes.

I mean, NASCAR is stupid? Jersey Shore is stupid? Whale Wars is stupid? Harley riders are obnoxious? Pro wrestling is stupid? Michael Jackson is weird? The Jonas Brothers are stupid? These are all just too easy to be funny for 30 minutes.

I think Matt and Trey get too worried about being preachy, but frankly some of the more controversial episodes like Best Friends Forever or Cartoon Wars were very preachy but were also some of the finest episodes of all time.

It also feels like they take on the targets too directly. It used to be that if they wanted to make fun of something they'd just do it within the boundaries of South Park and its characters. To make fun of the '04 election they never mentioned Bush or Kerry or Washington; instead they gave us an election between a douche and a turd, and we all understood what they were saying it was far funnier than if they had spent half an hour with Bush and Kerry on the screen.

Anyway, I still love the show and watch every week, but I've definitely been more disappointed the last few seasons. I'm hopeful it'll get better.

Good points. I would like to add that the recent episodes will not age well, since they are all parodies of insignificant, fleeting issues. Who's going to remember that a lot of celebrities died last summer in five years? Who's going to remember that Tiger Woods had an affair a decade later? The great thing about the early episodes is that they are still funny fifteen years later because they touched on universal topics, rather than the minutia of the 24 hour news cycle.

Probably everybody, because of Michael Jackson.

Trey: Better yet they will waste their worthless lives spending time commenting on it on a south park fan website! Ha Ha what sheep!

The fact that the show used to have the crappy animation to be different, and now uses all sorts of flashy, polished animation techniques making the show just like all the other cartoons isn't the problem. The problem is the writing and the voice-acting.

Maybe Trey Parker has been taking some drugs which has negatively affected his script-writing. He just has no idea who Cartman is anymore.

He no longer sounds like a child (have you heard his voice now, compared to his funny child-like voice in season 3?), he no longer acts like a child, and he no longer speaks like one. That goes for other characters as well.

I bet you still love Family Guy though.

'Kay, lets not turn this into a flamewar.

Brendle- Season 9 wasn't that good, admittedly (I initially remembered it being good but my memory obviously failed), but it's nowhere NEAR being the worst season. The worst season so far has been Season 14. The second worst...13. The third worst...12. Then the opening season. First season sucked (every show's first season isn't that good...they're finding their voice).

- Disagree a bit. I liked Season 1- wasn't great at all, but it was funny for what it was. And while 13 and 14 haven't been great, they didn't have bad clunkers like 9 did. That season was clunkorama.
That's how it's down here on the farm!
