701: Country equals Bush?

Postby HesseldeBoer » Sat Mar 11, 2006 5:16 pm

The Academy of Country Music announced Hill and McGraw's nomination for vocal event of the year for their duet "Like We Never Loved at All.
The 38-year-old country singer also criticized President Bush.
"Later in the news conference, McGraw let out a stream of frustration, growling, "I'm mad as hell, and I'm not going to take it anymore."

No, New Country = Bush

I think the argument in "I'm A Little Bit Country" was that country music was, in general, taking the side of pro-war fanatics. The link you posted, which does indeed suggest that country singers are capable of criticizing Dubya, only states that Tim McGraw and Faith Hill were pissed off over Bush's handling of Katrina. It doesn't say anything about their stance on the war.

Of course, the entire episode is an over-simplification. Willie Nelson and Merle Haggard, both country icons, have come out as being against the current war (which, according to many Republicans, isn't a war, derp!) in Iraq. Also, the Dixie Chicks have stated that they're ashamed to come from the same place as our current president. Still, at the time the episode was made, songs with lyrics like, "We'll put a boot up your ass/ It's the American way," were popular in the new, pop-like country music scene, and redneck culture (if you can call it culture, indeed) was on the rise. It was only a slight simplification to see country and rock falling along party lines.

Personally, I think most of the new country music coming out is both musically and thematically garbage. I have a co-worker who occasionally forces me to listen to the jingoistic drivel that is the new popular country music, and I am usually forced to run home for an antidote of Led Zeppelin, Beatles, Tom Petty, Pink Floyd, Pearl Jam, Neil Young, and Beethoven, sometimes all at once. I think Bush came to power and record companies got the bright idea that about 50% of the nation was composed of flag-waving morons, and those morons needed music they could understand, so we got fuckheads like Toby Keith blaring over the airwaves.

But I digress. I get your point, and I'm glad you made it. It's nice to see that country artists are willing to go against their stereotype, and I hope to see more doing so in the near future. Just as I hope that record companies give contracts to artists more thoughtful than Britney Spears or Jessica Simpson, I hope that the modern country music scene allows for viewpoints more diverse than those lampooned in South Park.

I agree with OK Computer. most country singers were supporting the idea of war - not supporting the troups! My husband and me live in Germany right now, were he's stationed and over here in Europe it was indeed that all the rockbands protesting the war got their voice heard. I don't say that all country singers are for that goddamn iraq war, but the loudest voices were indeed.

I think it is a great episode. especially the line saying: "I'm a little for supporting our troups - and I'm a little for bringing them home"

We've been through a whole shitload and I'm glad matt and trey said it out loud that the country is split!

Thank you.

Sidney
