Maybe the Waddling Nutsack hates Kyle becuase he turned him down for the Kindergarten Prom.
His attack, his goading and his quick departure from the discussion...clearly demonstrates that [Mr.Hat_DX27], like Stovepipe_Jam, Killahertz9, TheTowlieConnection and others before him, has no integrity.

Even though the other characters are awesome too, I reckon that Cartman is the one single reason that the show's so successful.

Well, he has to be. Thinking in literary terms here, you need an antagonist, and Cartman fulfills that role. Stan and Kyle are pretty much the same character, Kenny hardly does anything, and new antagonists every freaking episode would get old and boring. Cartman provides the opposite views to the protagonists, Stan and Kyle, which creates a conflict, which creates a story, followed up by an episode. It's just better to have the antagonist right within your own group, so more conflicts of a wider variety can be set up.

yes, without his sceaming, manipulative mind where would it all be? and if it would still be here, then definatly not as funny or enjoyable (god, my spelling sucks)
Why he hates kyle i have no theories at all. butters he just picks on for fun.

I guess he hates Kyle because their opinions are totally opposite from each others, and both are very strong in their views. Lately Kyle's gotten even more morally conscious as Cartman's gotten even more absurd. Not to mention the fact that Kyle himself already despises Cartman, so naturally, Cartman would feel the extreme need to hate him back.

... There're more reasons, but I'm feeling kinda sluggish when it comes to explaining right now.

To expand on what you said-- I interpret Cartman as the kind of person who knows he doesn't have that much going for him in the way of natural talent, so much of his personality is an attempt to compensate for his shortcomings. For example he pretends to be a tough guy, but is the biggest wimp of the group.

Additionally Cartman probably sees in Kyle everything he wishes he could have but doesn't. Kyle is fairly booksmart while Cartman is not, so Cartman compensates by coming up with evil schemes designed to prove Kyle wrong and rub it in his face. Kyle has a traditional family while Cartman has only a single mother and no father figure, so naturally Cartman rips on Kyle's mom (not that you can blame him sometimes). We know that Kyle is in much better physical condition than Cartman, hence Cartman always tries to beat him up, or wishes that Kyle would get sick and die. There are a lot of other examples, but I think that's enough to make my point.
