Does the episode "Stanley's Cup" seem unfinished?

Postby St. Frantic » Tue Sep 25, 2012 9:58 pm

It just seems like Matt and Trey couldn't figure out how to end the episode. It ends up being really depressing and left me feeling like more was supposed to happen.

What are your thoughts?

That's because you made the mistake of thinking it was Stan's story. It was actually the story of the Detroit Red Wings and their coach.

Have you listened to the commentary track on that episode?
(Spoiler: Stanley's Cup was what they called a "banked" episode, where they would start an episode and put it in the bank for later, so somewhere in the run they could take a break. All through the run, they talked about what they would do with it so they could take that break, and all through the run they couldn't figure out what to do. So then the end came, and they were completely burnt out because they worked for six weeks straight, and all they had left was that episode, so they threw something together and went home. They refer to the episode as "a little hodge-podgey.")
To believe in something just because you're afraid of the consequences if you don't believe in something is no reason to believe in something.

^This. It did seem like the episode just stopped, and everyone got up and went home.

It's not that odd. There's a number of episodes that you can tell ended up like Stanley's Cup or they just ran out of time in making it and thus things seem a little abrupt as something isn't resolved or otherwise feels unpolished.

M&T did an interview for Entertainment Weekly on their favorite and least favorite episodes, and "Stanley's Cup" was among the latter. They both agreed that it felt like "four-fifths of an episode" or something like that.
South Park is a platform for Matt and Trey's social commentary and satire; there is no canon and these characters only serve as tools for self-expression. Don't get attached.

Heck, Cash For Gold is another one that feels like they just couldn't tie everything up in time. We never get to see Cartman's business endeavor implode on itself or some other event to put an end to his latest scheme, which kinda rendered the entire B story of that episode a bit pointless.

Eh, it was pointless anyway. My guess is Matt and Trey made the stuff with Grandpa Marsh first, then decided the episode wasn't funny enough, and added in Cartman's stuff retrospectively to make it funnier, and possibly to make a point it was all Jewelers and not just Dean's. But the gag itself (different meanings of "f*ck") was done much better in "HumancentiPad" by Cartman anyway.

Despite that, I still love "Cash for Gold" for the emotional elements, even if it was pretty crappy in terms of humor.
