Re: The Randome Thread: Real Conversations Start Here!
i think we're in a second Cambrian explosion. Hear me out. The massive increase in the diversity of life called the Cambrian, in which so many animal body plans evolved, took place over the course of millions of years.
It was triggered by the evolution of the eye, they think, which started a predator-prey arms race. Death from predators or starving is what selected animals to evolve.
The evolution of the human brain has caused a mass extinction. It has selected animals to deal with the new force, the human mind. I think we are selecting for intelligence.
We've only been here for a few million years so its too early to tell. I think the world will be full of intelligent organisms from all manner of phyla in 10 million years if we don't blow the Earth up by then or wipe out all the animals ._.
Only the smartest will survive.
Of course we're likely to GM ourselves some rats with human brains just to piss off Michelle Bochmann & people like her, long before evolution has a chance to work.

Re: The Randome Thread: Real Conversations Start Here!
We are selecting for species that can cohabitate with humans and our settlements. I observe this when I go fishing. The fish are easier to catch in places where they don't see man-made lures very much. Although with the rise of catch and release angling, we're removing the selective pressure for fish that fall for our baits.
Another species I see adapting well to humans is white-tailed deer. There's lots of goodies in the suburbs to munch on and no natural predators; just cars to dodge and some half-hearted chases from domestic dogs. They learn how to behave around roads and highways so they don't get killed. I don't know if that makes them smarter. To them it's just another predator to avoid.
We keep changing stuff so fast, it's going to be hard for evolution to keep up.

Re: The Randome Thread: Real Conversations Start Here!
As always it's not the strongest nor the fastest nor the most intelligent that survive, it's the most adaptable. While some very intelligent species are at a brink of extinction, other less intelligent are thriving alongside humans.
Besides, evolution works very slow, and if an intelligent species that wants to compete with us evolves, I think humans will deal with it quite swiftly.
On the other hand, as human society's becoming more tolerant towards other species, we seem to favor more intelligent ones. We make efforts to preserve other apes and big predators. We keep non dangerous intelligent species as pets, like dogs, cats, parrots and even bacon... I mean pigs! As our society is becoming more peaceful and moral, we tent to look at highly intelligent species almost as one of our own. It is regarded as immoral to kill a dog or a dolphin. We understand that highly intelligent species are also capable of having complex emotions like us and therefor want to lessen their suffering. We are becoming aware that we're not as unique as once though we were.
So I think future is looking bright for intelligent non competitive species.

The beauty of intelligence is that it makes you so much more adaptable.

Re: The Randome Thread: Real Conversations Start Here!
True, but some species have physical drawbacks which have disable them to thrive. Like large apes (besides humans), which require high temperatures and humidity to survive. They are much more intelligent than rats and yet rats prosper, while they are struggling to survive. Not to mention cockroaches, which have no intelligence and have adapted to living with humans perfectly.

Re: The Randome Thread: Real Conversations Start Here!
Look at the old posters thread and you'll see it is indeed a trend. I stopped coming here completely for about a year then came back a few times, older posters are more active when the show is on as is the whole forum.
I'm not sure if it's even cosplay if you're dressed like someone as normal looking as the south park kids. I buy and wear clothes that look like what my favorite characters wear and wear that stuff all the time but it's not what you'd automatically see as cosplay. I'm guessing your costumes will be more noticeable, I've seen some really good SP cosplay online before.
That's why i think all intelligent life would be a 'mario' like us; no particular physical strengths or weaknesses so it can live in most places and get the full benefit of it's smarts. There are a lot of species like that -rats, pidgeons, etc. Weather growing a costly powerful brain would benefit them I don't know but they sure have the bodies for it.
Could you imagine if the pigeons that already target your car with their poop were super smart too, they would destroy us like in the Birds.Who am I kidding i just wanna see super intelligent flying rats.

Well, flying rats aren't super intelligent, but nature gave us the next best thing - parrots!

Re: The Randome Thread: Real Conversations Start Here!
Unfortunately creating flying pigs seems to be impossible. It's not enough to put wings on a pig and expect it to fly. It would have to be much lighter and have completely different physiology, so it wouldn't be a pig anymore. So no grilled pork wings anytime soon.
