XTC, one of my all-time favorite bands. Their first record came out in 1978, most of their records were between '80 and '89, but they have released records as recently as 2000. I'm pretty sure they're not currently working as a band any more. All their videos are embarassingy bad, but you can find them on YouTube.

They Might Be Giants started in the '80's (first lp in 1986) and are still around now.

My brother has a couple of favorites in that category as well.

He's more the Marillion fan than I, to be honest, but they did release a new CD earlier in the year.

Did the Tragically Hip have any albums in the '80s? I know they're still around.

Crowded House put out a new one this year as well.

And how's this for an attempted comeback: Information Society. It's true! adifferentdrum.com announced their new one not too long ago.

That was more a reunion album/tour. They broke up in the early '90's and reformed this year.

I was just thinking of some really big bands who have been around since the '80's: REM and U2.

U2's first album was in 1980, their most recent in 2004.

REM's first was in 1983, their most recent was also 2004.

Oh yes. First album in 87, but didn't catch on until their second album in 89. (thank you wiki)

I'm so happy. The Eagle is back. 97.1, KEGL started playing rock again yesterday! As I've mentioned elsewhere, they've been around since the early 80's, and went Tejano a year or two ago. Now they're back, and I am happys!

I'm in complete agreement with you there. When it was released, it didn't sound anything like the synth-pop and post punk of the day, and now, nearly 25 years later (is it really that long ago?) it still sounds fresh and original.

This one's essential listening. Even if you don't think you like REM, you really need to give this one a listen.

Wait, wasn't The Police/Sting a band from the '80s? I love their music...

^ ^;
Goodbye, cruel world...
I'm leaving you today
Goodbye, goodbye, goodbye...

Goodbye, all you people
There's nothing you can say
To make me change my mind...
Goodbye...

Their first two records were in the late '70's. Their last three in the early '80's, so yeah, that counts. Sting's first solo record was in the mid '80's, and I think he had a couple more records out in the 80's as well.

One of the best albums, if not THE best, during the decade had to be Def Leppard's "Hysteria." ('87) Bouncing back from when the drummer lost his arm three years earlier, they conjured up a special new drum set, and had some darn good tunes!

Lemme run down my list of favorite groups/bands/whathaveyou.

(the?) Eurythmics
Depeche Mode
The Cure
Ok, The Police
...I'll have to copy/paste from Angus because my brain refuses to work right now.
a-ha
Men Without Hats
Clash
Genesis
Duran Duran
Blondie
Cyndi Lauper
I was totally in love with Deborah Harry, and Cyndi Lauper when I was a kid, and I still am.
Siouxsie & the Banshees (although technically they're late 70's - early 90's, I really like their stuff from the mid 80's.)

I'm surprised that no one has mentioned Prince yet, even though I'd give a year off the end of my life to never hear '1999' again.

Prince had some good songs, bu he did suffer from overexposure.
He's also responsible for some pure CRAP as well, as this vidio proves:

Does anyone else here have the Live Aid DVDs? They had some really great acts. Of course, you can't beat Queen, but any others you liked?
