That's all very interesting. Also, you can never control everything in an experiment so it's hard to judge whether something is causation or just correlation. Cause and effect are weird.

4 people are trapped on a desert island with enough food for 3 days; 3 of them kill and eat the other, so living for an extra day in which they are rescued. Killing the 1 saves the 3. Alternatively they may be trapped in a mine with limited air.

The population explosion is likely to be self-correcting; people will run out of resources, or start wars, and that'll cull the population. Bringing the worst case scinario up to stop it happening naturally seems absurd. Most times people kill themselves, death is the thing they're trying to avoid, people seem to think doing it themselves is better than having it happen outside their control!

That doesn't mean that a controlled cull couldn't do some net good by limiting the number killed, but people will just breed to fill the gap. We need to limit breeding if we want to stop the explosion. the economic effects of an aging population will bite us if we do though ;I

I think we need to stop thinking about reducing the population and instead find somewhere to move it.

People have moved populations into other areas all through history - into the desert for instance. The world's a big place, but the grass really is greener most of the time.
